KINGSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island men's soccer team posted a 4-0 shutout victory over Duquesne on Friday night, October 27. Junior Geoffrey Cameron (Attleboro, Mass.) recorded two goals and an assist to lead URI to its 10th win of the season. With the win, Rhody improves to 10-4-4 (7-1-0 A-10) while Duquesne falls to 10-6-1 (5-3-0 A-10).
The Rams opened up the scoring at the 13:09 mark when senior Jeffrey Gonsalves (Markham, Ontario) found Cameron in a mess of Duquesne defenders. Cameron gained controlled of the ball and sent a shot past Zach Varga for the 1-0 Rhody lead. The pair connected again, 14 minutes later, when Gonsalves took a pass from Cameron and fired a shot into the left corner of the net.
Before the end of the half, junior Dawid Badecki (Jelenia Gora, Poland) put together some crafty work to maneuver through the Dukes' midfielders and feed a breakaway pass to Cameron. Cameron took the ball into the box and blasted a hard shot over the head of Varga for a 3-0 Rhody advantage at the break.
The Rams carried the momentum into the second half, scoring again just five minutes in when sophomore Kevin Hamill (Easton, Conn.) recorded his first collegiate goal with a hard shot to the right corner of the net. The goal was the final of the game as Rhody went on to win, 4-0.
The Rams (10-4-4, 7-1-0 A-10) are back at the URI Soccer Complex on Sunday, October 29, when they conclude the regular season with a 1:00 p.m. match against Saint Louis (11-3-2, 7-0-1 A-10).
