Baseball Fends Off Last Inning Surge, Defeats Harvard 14-12

Cambridge, Mass. - The University of Rhode Island baseball team ended its three game losing streak with a 14-12 win over Harvard (18-16-1) on Wednesday afternoon at O'Donnell Field in Cambridge.

Rhody got on the board first scoring three runs in the second inning on a pair of singles by junior designated hitter Greg Allen and senior left fielder Daryl Holcomb. Sophomore shortstop Mike O'Malley also drove in a run in the inning on a fielder's choice.

Harvard answered back with one run in the bottom of the second inning and four more in the third to take the lead 5-3.

Rhode Island scored three more runs in the fifth on back-to-back homeruns by junior right fielder Scott Brown and junior first baseman Ryan Cunningham. Brown's homerun also scored senior second baseman Wayne Russo who reached base on a single to right center.

The Rams offense continued into the sixth as they scored five runs on five hits. Russo singled to left field scoring senior Josh Nestor and O'Malley scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Brown. Both Russo and junior center fielder Dave Savard scored on wild pitches just before Cunningham hit his second homerun of the game to make the score 11-5.

Rhody stretched their lead with one run in the seventh on a homerun by sophomore catcher Zach Zaneski followed by two more runs in the eighth to make the score 14-5.

Harvard battled back scoring four runs in the eighth and three more in the ninth falling just short, losing 14-12.

The Rams (23-9) travel to Providence on Thursday to take on in-state rival Brown at 4:00 p.m.
