BOSTON, Mass. -
The Rhode Island men's soccer team was defeated by Boston University on Wednesday, September 20, at BU's Nickerson Field. The loss drops Rhody to 2-3-3 on the season, while the Terriers, who were ranked No. 19 in last week's adidas/NSCAA poll, improve to 5-1-3.
After a fast-paced first half that saw no scoring and just one shot on goal by each team, BU came out and netted a goal just 3:12 after the break. The Terriers' Neil Hlavaty fired a shot that freshman goalkeeper Chris Pennock (Middlesborough, England) blocked but couldn't control. Dan Schultz grabbed the rebound and sent it to the back of the net from 6 yards out for a 1-0 lead. The tally by Schultz proved to be the game-winner as it was the game's only goal.
Rhody did not go down without a battle though. The Rams earned six of their seven corner kicks and outshot BU, 11-7, in the second half. Terrier goalkeeper Zach Riffett had some help from a solid back line and was only forced to make three saves on the night. Pennock made four stops for URI.
The Rams (2-3-3) return to action on Tuesday, September 26, when they return to the URI Soccer Complex to host Harvard (5-2-0) at 7:00 p.m.
