KINGSTON, R.I. - Senior Lukasz Tumicz (Bisztynek, Poland) tallied his team-leading ninth goal of the season with less than five minutes remaining in regulation as the Rhode Island men's soccer team posted a 1-0 win over Fordham on Friday night at the URI Soccer Complex. Sophomore goalkeeper Chris Pennock (Middlesborough, England) made four saves in net for URI, recording his third shutout of the season.
"Our back line turned in another solid performance tonight," said head coach John O'Connor. "Adam [Howarth] and Callum [Bissett] both played especially well."
After 85 minutes of scoreless action, Tumicz stopped a goal kick by Dan Hajducky, made his way through the Fordham defense and moved the ball to senior Steve Mellen (North Kingstown, R.I.). Mellen then sent a quick pass back to Tumicz, who netted the game-winner with a shot that went past Hajducky and into the back right corner of the goal. The tally was Tumicz's second game-winner of the season while Mellen picked up his second assist in as many games.
"I thought Mellen had another excellent game for us tonight," added O'Connor. "He makes things happen out there and is difficult to defend."
Rhody allowed just two shots on goal in each half while outshooting Fordham by an overall margin of 19-7. Tumicz and senior Geoffrey Cameron (Attleboro, Mass.) each took a game-high four shots. URI also held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
With the win, Rhode Island improves to 6-7-2 (4-1-1 Atlantic 10) while Fordham drops to 5-7-3 (4-2-0 Atlantic 10).
The Rams return to action on Sunday, Nov. 4, when the host La Salle at 2:30 p.m. Prior to the start of the game, URI will honor the members of its senior class, who will be playing in their final game at the URI Soccer Complex.
