Game One
KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island senior Scott Brown (Portland, Maine) went 2-for-3 with two RBI and sophomore Oliver Palmer (North Kingstown, R.I.) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored as the URI baseball team cruised to a 9-3 win over Sacred Heart in the first game of a doubleheader at Bill Beck Field in Kingston, R.I. Freshman Nick Greenwood (Southington, Conn.) recorded his first collegiate victory in five-and-two-thirds innings while Sacred Heart's George Lamar was charged with the loss.
The Rams took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Brown sent a bases-loaded shot to shallow center to score junior Shaun Hagey (Ephrata, Pa.) and senior Eric Larson (Bradenton, Fla.). Rhody extended its lead in the second when senior Dave Savard (Nashua, N.H.) singled down the left field line to score Palmer. Savard then made the score 4-0 on a single to left by Hagey.
The Pioneers picked up a run in the fourth before junior Zach Zaneski (Waterford, Conn.) sent a leadoff double to center field to start the bottom of the inning. Palmer then reached base with a bunt that moved Zaneski to third and both runners scored on a double to left center by sophomore Dan Rhault (Lincoln, R.I.)
Sacred Heart rallied back with a run in the top of the fifth, but Rhody responded with runs by senior Ryan Cunningham (Centreville, Va.) and Brown in the bottom of the inning.
The Pioneers scored once more, in the top of the sixth, but Larson sealed the win for Rhody with a two-out solo shot in the bottom of the sixth.
Game Two
KINGSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island baseball team was defeated, 6-3, in game two of a Tuesday afternoon doubleheader at Bill Beck Field in Kingstown, R.I. After six complete innings, the game was called due to darkness.
After senior Gregg Allen (Dighton, Mass.), freshman Fernando Robles (Middleburg, Fla.) and senior Eric Larson (Bradenton, Fla.) scored in the second, third and fourth innings, respectively, Sacred Heart clawed back into the game and tied things up with a three-run fifth inning.
The Pioneers went on to plate three more runs in the top of the sixth and shut down the Rams in the bottom of the inning before the game was called.
Redshirt senior Adam Perkins (Hudson, N.H.) was charged with the loss after giving up one hit and three runs (one earned) in a third of an inning on the mound. Freshman starter Eric Smith (Milford, Conn.) threw four-and-two-thirds innings while giving up two hits and three earned runs. Sacred Heart's Chris Barthel earned the win for the Pioneers.
Rhode Island will return to Bill Beck field tomorrow, April 25, for a 3:00 p.m. game against Connecticut. The Rams and Huskies faced one another earlier this season (April 11) when UConn earned a 4-1 win in Storrs, Conn.
