PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Rhode Island men's soccer team suffered its fourth defeat of the season by a nationally-ranked opponent as it was handed a 1-0 loss at No. 21/16 Brown on Sunday afternoon in Providence, R.I. Sophomore goalkeeper Chris Pennock (Middlesborough, England) made six saves in net for Rhody.

"The in-state rivalry always makes this a tough game - and an important game - for both teams," said head coach John O'Connor. "We played hard today and I think we did a good job conceding just one goal against a very good team."

After a scoreless first half, Brown (4-0) came back from the break and got on the board 15 minutes later as Dylan Sheehan headed a Darren Howerton free kick past Pennock at the 59:59 mark.

URI (1-4) had a handful of opportunities as well, including a free kick from 19 yards out with just five seconds remaining in regulation. Unfortunately for the Rams, the shot by senior Steve Mellen (North Kingstown, R.I.) was blocked by the seven-man wall of Brown defenders and redshirt freshman Andres Ruiz's (Providence, R.I.) attempt sailed just wide of the goal as regulation expired, giving the Bears the 1-0 win.

"Chris (Pennock) had an excellent game today and Kedan (Crosby) played very well too," added O'Connor. "We really just need to create more quality chances out there."

For the game, Rhody took 15 shots to Brown's 16 and had the advantage in corner kicks, 9-6.

The Rams will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 21 when they return to the URI Soccer Complex to host Boston University at 5:00 p.m.
