KINGSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island men's soccer team shut down Boston College, 1-0, in the season opener for both teams, Tuesday night at the URI Soccer Complex. Senior Gary Crooks (Falkirk, Scotland) scored the lone goal of the match while classmate Chris Pennock (Spennymoor, England) turned away four shots to record the victory in net.

Pennock, who picked up his 15th career shutout, made all four stops in the second half as BC's Kyle Bekker skimmed a shot off the right post in the 29th minute.

Crooks broke the scoreless tie at the 57:51 mark when he sent a free kick past Boston College goalkeeper Justin Luthy for the 1-0 Rhode Island advantage.

Pennock was tested four times over the final 22 minutes of play - including a pair of shots by Kevin Mejia - but came up with a couple big saves to keep the Eagles off the board while Rhody held on for the win.

URI is back in action on Sunday afternoon when it travels to Siena for a 4 p.m. match against the Saints.
