WILMINGTON, N.C. - Senior
Zoey Angulo led all players with a 3-for-4 day at the plate as the Rhode Island baseball team defeated UNC Wilmington, 5-3, Sunday afternoon at Brooks Field. URI finished 2-1 in the three-game series with the Seahawks.
Five other Rams reached base more than once, including junior Evan Laude who extended his hit streak to nine games. Classmate Ken Graveline picked up the win on the mound for URI while freshman Mike Bradstreet allowed just two hits over three scoreless innings to earn the save.
Rhody (6-10) built up a 2-0 lead as sophomore Mike LeBel scored in the bottom of the third and senior Rob DeVeney crossed the plate in the fourth. Both runs were unearned as UNCW committed four errors on the afternoon.
The Seahawks (11-9) cut URI's lead in half the following inning, on an RBI single by Matt Holt.
Rhode Island pushed it to 3-1 in the top of the sixth when DeVeney scored on a wild pitch but UNCW came back and tied things up in the bottom of the inning.
Redshirt sophomore Adam Derner doubled to right to spark a two-out rally in the top of the seventh which eventually put the Rams back in front when junior pinch runner Kenny Burns scored on a single to right by Laude. URI added one more in the top of the eighth on redshirt sophomore Rob Noe's pinch-hit single that plated Angulo for the 5-3 victory.
Rhode Island returns to action with a 7 p.m. game at William & Mary on Tuesday night.
