PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore Thomas Lindroos
scored the game-winning goal - with just 1:41 remaining in
regulation - as the Rhode Island men's soccer team downed Bryant,
3-2, in the consolation game of the Ocean State Soccer Classic.
Defenders Robby
Gargaro and Dwayne Williams
were named to the All-Tournament Team.
With the win, URI evens its record at 1-1 while the Bulldogs
fall to 0-2.
Rhody took the lead early on as senior Jonathan Pereira
sent a corner kick toward the far post where Williams headed the
ball into the back of the net for the 1-0 advantage just 4:47 into
the frame. Not long after, junior Eric Hutson nearly
doubled the lead when he redirected another Pereira corner just
over the crossbar.
Sophomore Jamie Eckmayer
eventually put the Rams in front, 2-0, taking a pass from redshirt
freshman Joey
Haught and beating Bryant's George Spanos on the far side with
20 minutes remaining in the half.
However, Bryant's Christian Carrasquillo found the back of the
net twice in the final four minutes of the frame - both times off
assists from Sean Kaukas - to send the teams into halftime tied at
two apiece.
Rhody had a number of chances throughout the second half -
including another Pereira corner which Williams nearly got past
Bryant's goalkeeper - but the Rams did not score the game-winner
until the 88:19 mark when Lindroos netted a pass from junior Reece Markman.
Sophomore Matt
Ribbens was also credited with an assist on the play as he took
the ball into the box and sent a quick pass to Markman, who found
Lindroos at the opposite post.
As a team, the Rams held a 17-11 advantage in shots and
out-cornered the Bulldogs by a 9-2 margin.
Rhody returns to action at 7 p.m. on Friday when it takes on
host Old Dominion in the opening night of the ODU Stihl Soccer
Classic.
