Men's Soccer Suffers 5-1 Setback at Duquesne

How It Happened:
Duquesne scored four unanswered goals over the last 25 minutes of play, securing the 5-1 win over Rhode Island on Sunday afternoon in Pittsburgh. The Dukes struck first and took a 1-0 lead into the break before URI evened the score at 1-1 in the 58th minute.

Inside the Box Score:

  • With the loss, Rhode Island drops to 5-9-1 on the season and 2-3-1 in Atlantic 10 play. Duquesne, meanwhile, improves to 5-7-2 (2-2-1 Atlantic 10).
  • Rhode Island held a 15-14 advantage in total shots and a 8-6 edge in shots on goal.
  • Each team attempted four corner kicks. Rhode Island's were in all in the first half and Duquesne's were all in the second half.
  • There were three offsides calls in the match - all against Duquesne.
  • Rhody committed 12 fouls to Duquesne's 11.
  • No cards issued to either team.
  • Redshirt senior goalkeeper Peyton Warwick finished with one save and one goal against before being replaced by redshirt sophomore Adam Blanchard, who allowed four goals in 30:09 between the posts. Colin Thorp gave up one goal and turned away seven shots for the Dukes.
  • Austin Lange (20:55), Colin Phillips (76:27), Simon Gomez (85:47), Joshua Patterson (87:12) and Nick Disomma (88:28) each scored goals for Duquesne.
  • Gomez, Patterson, Jared Gentile and Derek Patrizio all recorded assists for the Dukes. Gentile finished with three.
  • Senior Reece Markmak netted URI's lone goal of the match at 59:52, with the assist going to redshirt sophomore Joey Haught.
  • Freshman Matt Sykes led the Rams with five shots (four on goal) while Patterson put a team-high two attempts on goal for Duquesne.

Additional Notes:

  • The loss drops Rhode Island to 11-6-0 in the all-time series against Duquesne.
  • The 5-1 loss was Rhody's most lopsided result this season.
  • Duquesne's fourth goal was scored on a penalty kick. It is the third PK tally scored against the Rams this season.
  • Markman's goal was his second of the season and third of his career. He now has 13 career points (3G/7A).
  • Haught's assist was his second of the season and second in as many games. He now has 11 career points (3G/5A).
  • Junior Robby Gargaro has not missed a game - or a start - since joining the Rams in 2009. As a freshman, he started in each of URI's 20 matches and went on to start all 18 games last season. Sunday's contest at Duquesne extended Gargaro's streak to 52 consecutive starts.
