KINGSTON, R.I. - Senior Tom Coulombe recorded two runs, two RBI and three stolen bases as the Rhody baseball team defeated Quinnipiac, 6-0, on Tuesday afternoon at Bill Beck Field. With the victory, the Rams - who have won six of their last seven games - improve to 17-13 while the Bobcats drop to 13-15.
Junior Anthony Pisani struck out five batters and gave up just three hits in 6.0 innings of work to earn the win - his fourth in as many appearances. Pisani has allowed just two runs over his last 18.1 innings pitched while fanning 19 and issuing only two walks.
Senior Gardner Leaver tossed a scoreless seventh and eighth before handing the ball over to junior Mike LeBel in the top of the ninth. LeBel, who was making his first-ever appearance as a collegiate pitcher, struck out one and did not allow a hit the rest of the way.
Prior to taking the mound, LeBel had gone 2-for-4 at the plate, scoring once and driving in a run. Freshman Jeff Roy also paced the Rhody offense with a 3-for-4 day at the plate, two runs scored and a stolen base. URI finished the day a perfect 4-for-4 in stolen base attempts.
The Rams were also prefect defensively, improving to 9-1 when finishing with no errors in the field.
LeBel got things started early on, leading off the first with a single to short before scoring on a ground out by redshirt junior Jeff Cammans. Roy also scored on a errant throw by Quinnipiac's Joe Poletsky, giving Rhody a quick 2-0 lead.
Redshirt junior Dan Haverstick then made it 3-0 in the second when he came home on a two-out single up the middle by LeBel.
The Rams tacked on two more in the fifth as Coulombe tripled to left to drive in Roy before crossing the plate himself on a wild pitch. Coulombe went on to tally Rhody's sixth and final run in the bottom of the eighth when he scored on a sac fly by sophomore Kevin Stenhouse.
George Dummar took the loss for the Bobcats, giving up three runs on three hits over the first four innings of play. As a team, Quinnipiac managed just four hits on the afternoon.
The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Bryant for a 3:30 p.m. game against the Bulldogs.
