RICHMOND, Va. - The Rhode Island baseball team gave up 10 unearned runs in a 12-9 loss to Richmond on Saturday afternoon at Pitt Field. Senior Kenny Burns went 3-for-5 and drove in three runs, as did redshirt junior Dan Haverstick, who recorded his first home run of the season in the loss.

Junior Mike LeBel also homered for URI while redshirt sophomore Pat Fortunato and seniors Tom Coulombe and Kyle Borden finished with two hits apiece.

Senior starter Ken Graveline got a no-decsion, going 6.1 innings with five strikeouts and just one earned run.

Richmond (20-17-2, 7-4) got on the board first, plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the third but Rhody (22-16, 8-6) stormed back with a five-run fifth to take over the lead.

Junior Milan Adams got things started with a lead-off walk before Haverstick homered to right field to even the score at 2-2. Fortunato went on to score on a base hit by Burns, setting up LeBel's two-run shot over over the 360 marker in right centerfield.

The Spiders closed the gap in the bottom of the frame, cutting it to 5-4, but a two-out, two-run single by Burns plated Fortunato and redshirt junior Jeff Cammans in the top of the sixth to make it 7-4 Rhode Island.

The Rams added two more in the top of the seventh as Coulombe and Borden both crossed the plate to put URI in front 9-4 before Richmond began its comeback.

The Spiders used three unearned runs to make it 9-7 in the bottom of the seventh before tacking on five more - four of which were unearned - in the bottom of the eighth to reclaim the lead for good at 9-12.

Redshirt sophomore reliever Rob Curran took the loss, giving up three runs (all unearned) in the eighth. Anthony Cafagna earned the win for the Spiders while Billy Barber picked up the save.

Rhody and Richmond return to Pitt Field to close out the series at Noon on Sunday.
