CAMDEN, N.J. - The Rhode Island baseball team dropped a 5-2 decision to top-seeded Charlotte in semifinal action at the 2011 Atlantic 10 Championship. The Rams will now take on the winner of #3 Dayton vs. #5 Richmond in a 7 p.m. elimination game, tonight at Campbell's Field.
Freshman Jeff Roy (Cranston, R.I.) led the way for Rhody (31-21) with a 2-for-3 day at the plate. As a team, the Rams collected five hits on the afternoon, compared to Charlotte's 12.
Redshirt senior Stephen Peterson (Danvers, Mass.) was charged with the loss, giving up three runs on seven hits over five innings of work. Tyler Barnette picked up the win for the Niners while Chad Rothlin tossed 3.1 innings of no-hit relief.
After three scoreless innings, Charlotte broke things open with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth.
Roy then led off the sixth with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a base hit by redshirt junior Jeff Cammans (Jamestown, R.I.) before both runners moved into scoring position on a failed pickoff attempt by Barnette. A fielding error by 49ers shortstop Justin Roland then allowed Roy to score and senior Tom Coulombe (Lincoln, R.I.) followed with a sacrifice fly that plated Cammans to make it a 3-2 game.
However, Charlotte (41-14) responded with a run in the seventh and another in the eighth to secure the 5-2 victory, marking the fourth time the Niners have defeated the Rams at the conference Championship.
