How It Happened:
After 42 scoreless minutes, Charlotte netted a pair of goals less than two minutes apart to enter halftime with a 2-0 lead over the Rams. The 49ers returned from the break and quickly tacked on two more to lead 4-0 less than ten minutes into the second frame.
Matt Sykes made good on a penalty kick to put Rhode Island on the board at the 62:37 mark, but Charlotte countered with two more goals for the 6-1 victory.
Inside the Box Score:
- With the loss, Rhode Island drops to 2-9-3 (1-3-1 Atlantic 10). The 18th-ranked 49ers, meanwhile, improve to 10-2-3 overall and 4-1-1 in the A-10.
- URI became just the second A-10 team to score on Charlotte this season. Until Sykes' second-half tally, the Niners had logged 463:32 consecutive minutes without conceding a goal - a span which included four straight shutouts against Richmond, Fordham, La Salle and Massachusetts.
- Charlotte held a 24-9 advantage in total shots and a 15-4 edge in shots on goal.
- The 49ers also out-cornered the Rams, 5-2.
- Rhody committed 12 fouls to Charlotte's 10.
- Thomas Spenser recorded seven saves and allowed four goals over 55:02. He was replaced by Adam Blanchard, who turned away two shots and allowed a pair of of goals over the final 34:58. Klay Davis made three saves for the Niners before being replaced by Austin Pack, played the last 27:35 and allowed the Rams' to score on a PK.
- Giuseppe Gentile led Charlotte with a game-high 10 shots (five on goal) while Sykes had a team-high five attempts (three on goal) for the Rams.
Additional Notes:
- Rhode Island is now 2-3-3 all time against Charlotte.
- The game marked the Rams' fourth outing against a ranked team this season. Prior to facing #18 Charlotte, Rhody had taken on #24 Brown, #35 Northwestern and #34 Boston College - all on the road.
- Sykes' goal was his fourth of the season and seventh for his career. He now has 21 career points (7G/7A).
- Rhody is a perfect 2-for-2 in penalty kicks this season - both of which have been taken by Sykes.
