Rhody Suffers 2-0 Setback at Fairfield

How It Happened:
After a scoreless first half, Jordan Ayris put Fairfield on the board just six minutes into the second frame when he chipped a cross over Rhody keeper Thomas Spenser for the 1-0 lead. Ayris struck again in the 74th minute when he deposited a rebound ball into the back of the net to give the Stags the 2-0 win.

Inside the Box Score:

  • Fairfield held a 17-9 advantage in total shots and a 9-6 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Stags recorded six corner kicks while Rhody had three.
  • URI committed 19 fouls to Fairfield's 12. 
  • Andy Hess and Matt Sykes led Rhode Island with two shots each, both of which were on goal. Ayris put a game-high four attempts on net for the Stags.
  • Spenser finished the night with six saves while Michael O'Keeffe turned away six shots for Fairfield.

Additional Notes:

  • With the win, Fairfield improves to 4-4-0 while Rhody drops to 1-6-2.
  • The loss also drops Rhody to 13-2-3 in the all-time series vs. Fairfield. The Stags' last win over the Rams came during the 1991 season. Since then, URI had gone 2-0-2 before tonight's loss.
  • Robby Gargaro has not missed a game - or a start - since joining the Rams in 2009. As a freshman, he started in each of URI's 20 matches and went on to start all 18 games in both 2010 and 2011. Saturday's contest at Fairfield extended Gargaro's streak to 65 consecutive starts.

The Rams are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 6 when they return to the URI Soccer Complex to open Atlantic 10 play with a 7 p.m. game against Massachusetts.
