Men's Soccer Plays to 4-4 Draw With Bryant in OSSC Consolation Match

How It Happened:
Bryant took a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute, after a goal by Ryan Kalan. Back-to-back tallies by URI's Trevor Moran and Robby Gargaro then put the Rams on top 2-1 after 33 minutes of play but Bryant evened things up before the break with a goal by Ryan Stone.

Matt Sykes went on to give Rhody a 3-2 edge on a penalty kick in the 51st minute, but Bryant knotted things up just over two minutes later on a PK of its own. The Bulldogs then moved in front 4-3 on a goal by Brett LaRocque before Sykes registered his second goal of the game to tie it at 4-4 with eight minutes left to play.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net in overtime, ending things in a 4-4 tie.

Inside the Box Score:

  • With the draw, Rhode Island and Bryant both move to 0-2-1.
  • Rhody held a 21-17 advantage in total shots and a 10-6 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Rams also out-cornered Bryant, 13-5.
  • Bryant was whistled offsides four times while the Rams were once.
  • Rhody committed 14 fouls to Bryant's 25.
  • Adam Blanchard finished with two saves for the Rams while Bryant's Chris Knaub turned away five shots on the night. Both keepers allowed four goals.
  • Moran scored Rhody's first goal of the season when he tied the score (1-1) at the 26:35 mark.
  • Gargaro's go-ahead tally came at 32:33 with assists going to Sykes and Mike Casey.
  • Sykes went on to score on a PK at 50:34 before scoring again at 82:05.
  • Blanchard assisted on the final goal of the game, sending a long ball up the field to Sykes, who then blasted a shot into the back of the net from outside the box.
  • Seven different Bulldogs contributed to Bryant's scoring as Ryan Stone, Brett LaRocque, Connor Norat and Ray Kalan netted goals and Kevin Tejada, Lucas Gurriero and Matt Gurriero picked up assists.
  • Sykes led the Rams with six shots (three on goal) while LaRocque recorded a team-high six attempts (two on goal) for Bryant.

Additional Notes:

  • Rhode Island remains unbeaten in the all-time series vs. Bryant, moving to 2-0-1.
  • Moran and Gargaro's goals were their first of their respective careers.
  • Sykes becomes the first player this season to turn in a multiple-point game. He now has 15 career points (5G/5A).
  • Casey's assist was his first of the season and fourth of his career. He now has six career points (1G/4A).
  • Blanchard's assist was the first of his career.
  • Gargaro has not missed a game - or a start - since joining the Rams in 2009. As a freshman, he started in each of URI's 20 matches and went on to start all 18 games in both 2010 and 2011. Monday's contest against Bryant extended Gargaro's streak to 59 consecutive starts.

Ocean State Soccer Classic Wrap-Up:

  • Brown won its first-ever OSSC title with a 1-0 win over Providence in the first game of the night.
  • Eric Robertson (Brown), Alex Markes (Brown), Tariq Akeel (Brown), Wilder Arboleda (Providence), Brandon Adler (Providence), Keasel Broome (Providence), Matt Sykes (Rhode Island), Brett Uttley (Rhode Island), Ryan Kalan (Bryant) and Matthew D'Amelio (Bryant) were named to the All-Tournament Team.
  • Brown's Dylan Remick was selected as the Ocean State Soccer Classic MVP.

Up Next:
The Rams (0-2-1) are back in action next weekend when they travel to Northern Illinois for the NIU adidas Invitational. Rhody will face NIU on Friday and Northwestern on Sunday.
