How it Happened
With Rhode Island's season six minutes and 37 seconds away from being over, Stavros Zarokostas curled a shot into the back of the goal to give the Rams a 2-1 double-overtime victory at Duquesne and secure URI's place in next week's Atlantic 10 Championship. Because George Washington defeated Saint Louis earlier in the day and Dayton knocked off VCU just before the Rams and Dukes went into the second overtime period, Rhody could only get into the conference tournament win a win.
Zarokostas' golden goal came at the 103:23 mark, when he bent a shot over the Duquesne defense and past goalkeeper Evan Kozlowski for the 2-1 victory. Peder Kristiansen was credited with an assist on the play.
Kristiansen also picked up an assist on Rhody's first goal of the game - a 10th-minute header by Tyler Dickson. The Rams took the early lead into the break, but Duquesne later equalized on a penalty kick, just 4:22 into the second half.
