Smirnov Competes in Zone A Diving Championship

KINGSTON, R.I. - Senior Maria Smirnov ended her collegiate career with well-ranking performances in 1-meter diving and 3-meter diving at the NCAA Zone A Diving Championship hosted by the Christiansburg Aquatic Center in Blacksburg, Va. on Monday, Mar. 6 and Tuesday, Mar. 7.

Smirnov competed in 3-meter diving on day one, finishing in 32nd out of 55 performers with a score of 234.15.

On day two, during 1-meter diving, Smirnov put together a score of 178.85 for 49th place.

Smirnov is just the second Rhode Island diver in program history to qualify for and take part in the NCAA Zone A Diving Championship. The only other to do so was Ashley Good in 2002, where she finished 18th out of 40 in 1-meter diving (214.2) and 16th in 3-meter diving (402.7).

During the season, Smirnov placed third or higher in both 1-meter and 3-meter diving in all but three meets, including 10 first-place finishes between the two events.

Her season and career high score in 1-meter diving was 268.57, which she reached at New Hampshire. Her season high in 3-meter diving was 255.22 versus Wagner on Senior Day.
