Day Three Results
HAMPTON, Va. -
Molly Beckwith picked up Rhode Island's second individual medal in as many days and also set a program record to highlight a strong day for the Rams at the Atlantic 10 Championships Friday.
In the strongest day for Rhode Island in a decade, the Rams scored 80 team points Friday. Rhody had seven swimmers advance to either the finals or consolation finals on the day, helping boost URI into seventh place in the team standings.
Beckwith gave the team energy during the morning preliminaries when she broke the program record in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 54.84 seconds. That not only broke the record set by Caitlin Guccione (55.49 seconds) in 2018, it also earned Beckwith a spot in the event finals.
That was just the start of what turned out to be a huge day for the team. During the evening session, Beckwith led off in the 100-yard butterfly finals. She placed eighth with a time of 54.60 seconds, breaking the program record for the second time in a matter of hours. Beckwith earned 11 team points with the performance.
Next up was the 400-yard Individual medley, where Rhode Island had three of the top 16 finishers.
Julianna Tyler became the first Ram to reach the finals of the event since URI head coach Lily Falconer Deering took third place in 2011.Tyler's time of 4:22.67 was good for 15th place and 14 team points.
Also scoring in the 400 IM were
Emma Raser and
Lily Gugino. Raser (4:26.32) took 11th place, one spot ahead of Gugino (4:27.07). Raser earned six points and Gugino added five.
Next up was Beckwith in the 200-yard freestyle. She placed second with her time of 1:49.17, coming in behind St. Bonaventure's Anna Forjan (1:48.75). Beckwith became the first URI swimmer to medal in the event in 12 years, when Chaya Zabludoff won the event in 2014.
Rylee Kelly added a 16th-place finish to earn a point in the event for URI.
The final individual to score for the Rams was
Logan Norrid. She placed 11th in the 100-yard breaststroke to add six team points.
Rhody's team of
Lily Mair, Norrid, Beckwith and
Avery Potyrala tied for eighth place in the 400-yard medley relay to tack on 20 more team points before the night was over.
The final day of the Atlantic 10 Championships features seven events: the 1650-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke; 100-yard freestyle; 200-yard breaststroke; 200-yard butterfly; 1-meter diving and the 400-yard freestyle relay.
