How it Happened
Rhode Island outlasted Fordham in a nine-round shootout Friday afternoon, earning a spot in the Atlantic 10 finals for the second year in a row. The teams played 110:00 of scoreless soccer before moving to the decisive shootout.

Ludvik Benco came close to breaking the deadlock in the 43rd minute when he fired a shot on goal that Fordham's Konstantin Weis managed to tip just over the crossbar.

Still scoreless early in the second half, Fordham nearly got on the board in the 51st minute when Tomer Zloczower drilled a shot off the crossbar.

Benco had a look at an open net with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation, as Weis was unable to corral the rebound on a shot by Edvin Akselsen, but Benco's attempt sailed over the crossbar.

With the score still knotted after two overtime periods, the teams headed to a penalty kick shootout to decide who would advance to Sunday's title game. There, Stefan Schmidt stopped the first shot he faced and Edvin Akselsen converted his attempt to give Rhody an early 1-0 edge. Fordham was able to even it at 2-2 after three rounds. URI and Fordham both made their shots in rounds three through six, but Schmidt and Weis both made a stop in the seventh round to keep the shootout tied 5-5. Fordham made it's eighth-round shot, and Benco kept Rhody alive by converting his attempt as well. Schmidt then made his third save of the shootout in the ninth round setting Simon Trcka up for what proved to be the match clincher.
