How It Happened
Rhode Island won its 14th straight team title at the Harold Anderson Invitational, finishing well out in front of the seven-team field. The Rams finished with 754.5 points, easily ahead of Binghamton (613.5). Vermont (579), Holy Cross (576) and Assumption (503) were bunched together in the middle of the pack.
Day Three of the Invitational featured six events. Rhody got one individual title, as senior Caitlin Guccione won the 200-yard butterfly by nearly two seconds over the rest of the field.
Rhode Island's depth in the 200-yard breaststroke played a key role, as the Rams claimed three of the top eight spots. Senior Cassidy Fries placed second and was just .69 seconds behind Maine's Caroline Strolic. Junior Rebecca Younts placed third and freshman Aimee Garcia added an eighth-place finish to help the Rams scored 44 team points in the event.
Standouts From the Pool
- Junior Cara Megill placed third in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:41.85, scoring 16 team points in the process. Senior Sabrina Anderson added an eighth-place finish and sophomore Zoe Sheridan took 10th, combining for an additional 18 points.
- Sophomore Kaitlyn Bansky scored 14 team points by placing fifth in the 200-yard backstroke. Senior Emma Grace Pecha added a seventh-place finish in the event, getting 12 team points.
- The team of freshman Aimee Garcia, freshman Camryn Kreuscher, sophomore Grace Kennedy and senior Mackenna Dunn placed seventh in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Junior Cara Megill, senior Maddie Horner, sophomore Zoe Sheridan and sophomore Kristin Johnson teamed to placed ninth, as Rhody got 42 total points.
What's Next
Rhode Island is off until its Winter Training Trip to Sarasota, Fla. in January. During that trip, the Rams will take on Atlantic 10 rival Richmond in a neutral site competition on Friday, Jan. 3.
