How it Happened
Top-seeded Rhode Island dominated eighth-seeded Davidson in an Atlantic 10 quarterfinal matchup Saturday, defeating the Wildcats 7-3 at the URI Soccer Complex. With the win, Rhody advances to its sixth consecutive A-10 semifinal.

The Rams wasted absolutely no time getting on the board as Sondre Karterud scored on a pass from Noam Kolakofsky just 1:50 into the game. Filippo Tamburini then netted his team-leading eighth goal of the season in the 27th minute when he tapped in a free kick from Peder Kristiansen.

Kristiansen added to the Rams' lead five minutes later, curling in a corner kick that sent Rhody into halftime with a 3-0 advantage.

Charlie Booth kept things rolling in the second half, scoring his first goal of the season at the 48:53 mark, off another set piece from Kristiansen. Just over a minute later, goalkeeper Stefan Schmidt booted a ball way over the midfield line, where Tamburini flicked a header to Stavros Zarokostas, who had a wide open net for the 5-0 lead.

Davidson's Jamie Diluzio converted a penalty kick in the 59th minute to put the Wildcats on the board, but Rhody responded with two more goal over the next nine minutes. Edvin Akselsen assisted on both, first playing a corner to Niklas Middrup for the 6-1 lead, then finding Noam Kolakofsky in the 6-yard box to go up 7-1.

The Wildcats got an unassisted tally from Mateo Alzate in the 85th minute, and scored on another PK in the 86th minute, but the deficit was too much to overcome as Rhody eased its way to the 7-3 victory.

Inside the Box Score

  • Rhode Island's seven goals came from seven different players, including all four defenders.
  • Additionally, goalkeeper Stefan Schmidt added an assist. He also made six saves on the night.
  • The seven-goal output was the Rams' best offensive showing since netting seven goals in back-to-back 7-0 wins over UMass and Duquesne at the 1999 Atlantic 10 Championship.
  • Senior Peder Kristiansen scored his first goal of the season and added two assists for the Rams. Already the best offensive defender in program history, Kristiansen upped his career points total to 28 (2g/24a). His 24 assists alone tie for fifth all-time at URI.
  • Senior Sondre Karterud registered his first career goal in the win. Ironically, all three of his points this season (1g/1a) have come against Davidson.
  • Graduate defender Charlie Booth's goal also was his first as a Ram.
  • Senior center back Niklas Middrup netted his second goal of the season. He now has 15 career points on seven goals and one assist.
  • Redshirt sophomore Edvin Akselsen's two assists were his 11th and 12th of the season. He now has 38 career points (10g/18a) in 35 games played.
  • Senior Noam Kolakofsky and junior Filippo Tamburini each had a goal and an assist in the win. Tamburini now has 20 points on the season (8g/4a) while Kolakofsky has 13 (4g/5a).
