Rams Dominate Vermont, 192-108, on Senior Day

How It Happened
Rhode Island continued its winning ways, dominating Vermont, 192-108, at the Tootell Aquatic Center Saturday afternoon.

The Rams (9-0) won each of the first six events, and eight of the first nine events overall. In all, Rhody won 13 of the 16 events, was it led from start to finish.

Rhode Island took the top three spots in the 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 1-meter dive and 500-yard freestyle events. The Rams took the top two places in three other events, as a total team effort helped Rhode Island extend the best start to a season in program histoory.

Standouts From the Pool

  • The team of freshman Julia Renna, junior Rebecca Younts, senior Caitlin Guccione and freshman Camryn Kreuscher won the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:49.48 to give the Rams 11 team points.
  • Senior Sabrina Anderson and junior Cara Megill took first and second, respectively, in the 1000-yard freestyle. Anderson had a time of 10:45.34, followed by Megill (10:47.70.).
  • Senior Mackenna Dunn led a 1-2-3 Rhody finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:56.68. Sophomore Zoe Sheridan (1:56.86) and freshman Aimee Garcia (1:57.13) followed her to the wall.
  • Sophomore Grace Kennedy (59.76) and freshman Julia Renna (1:00.02) were the first two to touch the wall in the 100-yard backstroke.
  • Rhody got its second 1-2-3 finish of the day in the 100-yard breaststroke. Junior Rebecca Younts (1:06.65) took first place, followed by junior Brooke Kelley (1:08.42) and senior Cassidy Fries (1:08.44).
  • Senior Caitlin Guccione won the 200-yard butterfly, while freshman Shauna Killane added a third-place finish. Guccione's time of 2:09.22 was nearly four full seconds ahead of the field.
  • In the 1-meter dive, senior Katy Evans, senior Alyssa Campone and junior Cameron Murray swept the top three spots, combining for 15 team points. Evans and Campone were first and third, respectively, in the 3-meter dive.
  • In the 100-yard freestyle, Mackenna Dunn picked up her second individual win of the day. Her time of 54.12 seconds was ahead of Vermont's Vivian Nguyen (54.54) and URI teammates Zoe Sheridan (54.75) and Grace Kennedy (54.97).
  • Junior Rebecca Younts was the winner in the 200-yard breaststroke, her second victory of the day. Cassidy Fries was second for the Rams.
  • Freshman Aimee Garcia (5:10.38), senior Sabrina Anderson (5:13.89) and junior Cara Megill (5:17.65) were the first three to the wall in the 500-yard freestyle.
  • Garcia added a win in the 200-yard IM. Her time of 2:12.20 was more than one second ahead of Vermont's Katie Rivers (2:13.37).
  • Before the meet, seniors Sabrina Anderson, Alyssa Campone, Mackenna Dunn, Katy Evans, Cassidy Fries, Caitlin Guccione, Maddie Horner and Emma Grace Pecca were honored. The group was competing in its final scoring meet at home.

What's Next
Rhode Island hosts Fairfield and Coast Guard in a non-scoring meet Friday, Jan. 24 at 5 p.m. Rhody's diving team competes at the Dick Comanzo Diving Invitational in Ithaca, N.Y. Jan. 25-26.
