How It Happened
Rhode Island won all but one event in which it had participants as the Rams dominated a non-team scoring meet against Fairfield and Coast Guard Friday night.
The Rams won 14 of the 15 events in which it had competitors. Seniors Caitlin Guccione and Katy Evans and freshmen Aimee Garcia and Julia Renna all won two events for the Rams. Also winning events for the Rams were seniors Sabrina Anderson and Mackenna Dunn, junior Brooke Kelley and sophomore Grace Kennedy.
Standouts in the Pool
- Senior Caitlin Guccione won both Butterfly races, taking the 200-yard Butterfly with a dominant performance. Guccione finished in 2:11.51, nearly seven seconds ahead of the field. In the 100-yard Butterfly, Guccione edged her teammate, senior Mackenna Dunn, 59.56 second to 59.74 seconds.
- Senior Katy Evans won both diving events. She edged classmate Alyssa Campone in the 1-meter dive, 248.84 to 242.48. They finished 1-2 in the 3-meter dive as well, with Evans scoring 271.65 and Campone recording a total of 243.60.
- Freshman Aimee Garcia won the 400-yard Individual Medley with a time of 4:38.63, more than six seconds in front of the field. In the 200-yard breaststroke, Garcia and junior Brooke Kelley gave the Rams a 1-2 finish.
- Freshman Julia Renna was victorious in both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke races.
- Renna also teamed with junior Rebecca Younts, junior Cara Megill and freshman Camryn Kreuscher to win the 200-yard medley relay, which was the first event of the night.
- In the 200-yard Freestyle, Rhode Island took the top four spots. Senior Sabrina Anderson was followed to the wall by teammates Megill, Kreuscher and senior Emma Grace Pecha.
- Rhode Island also grabbed the top four finishes in the 100-yard Freestyle. Senior Mackenna Dunn, freshman Camryn Kreuscher, sophomore Grace Kennedy and sophomore Kristin Johnson finished in that order.
- Rhody took the top three spots in the 100-yard Breaststroke. Junior Brooke Kelley, senior Cassidy Fries and Rebecca Younts provided the sweep.
- The closest race of the night was the 50-yard freestyle. Sophomore Grace Kennedy just touched ahead of Fairfield's Sam D'Alessandro by .03 seconds, with a time of 25.56. Rhody senior Maddie Horner took third in a time of 25.74 seconds.
- The relay 200-yard Freestyle team of senior Mackenna Dunn, sophomore Grace Kennedy, freshman Camryn Kreuscher and sophomore Kristin Johnson closed out the night with one more victory for the Rams.
What's Next
Rhode Island's divers travel to Ithaca, N.Y. Saturday, Jan. 25 for the two-day Dick Comanzo Diving Invitational. The entire team is back in action for its regular-season finale at Central Connecticut on Sunday, Feb. 2.
