How It Happened
Rhode Island fought back from a late surge from Vermont as the teams tied atop the standings of the Harold Anderson Invitational Sunday.
After leading through the bulk of the weekend, Rhode Island found itself trailing the Catamounts by 14 points in the standings with three events remaining. A dominant showing by Vermont in the 200-yard backstroke was the primary cause of the late push. The Catamounts took second, third and fourth in the event, outscoring the Rams 48-16 (32 points) to take the top spot in the team standings.
Rhode Island retook the team lead after the 200-yard breaststroke.
Aimee Garcia placed third and
Brooke Kelley was fifth, accounting for 30 of the 32 points URI got in the event. Rhody outscored Vermont 32-9 in the event, moving back in front in the team standings, 689-680.
With two events remaining, the teams took to the 200-yard butterfly. It was a wild affair, as Rhode Island and Vermont claimed six of the top seven finishers. URI's
Jenna Salem was second, followed to the wall by the Vermont trio of Madison Supple, Kara Campbell and Maggie Mantz. Rhody's
Shauna Killane claimed key points in sixth and seventh place, respectively, as the Catamounts made up three team points in the event, scoring 45 to URI's 42.
Rhode Island clung to a 731-725 lead going into the final event, the 400-yard free relay. The Vermont quartet of Kira Parker, Jackie House, Cailin Campbell and Mina Poppas won the event with a meet-record time of 3:28.44. The 40 points for first place momentarily gave Vermont a 34-point lead atop the standings.
However, Rhode Island got a third-place finish – and 32 points – from the team of
Jordynn Brown,
Quinn Frost,
Mia Bonvissuto and
Ellie Oswald to close the gap to two points. URI then took sixth place when the team of
Camryn Kreuscher,
Aimee Garcia,
Michaela Degnan and
Grace Kennedy finished in 3:34.99, just 0.3 seconds ahead of Vermont's seventh-place team. The 0.3 seconds meant Rhody received 26 points and Vermont got 24 points, leading to a first-place tie between the schools.
