How it Happened
For the second straight day, Rhode Island rallied in the late innings to grab a road win over Old Dominion, beating the Monarchs 6-4 Saturday evening.
Pinch hitter
Sonny Ulliana lofted a long double to right field in the top of the 10th inning to drive in
Xavier Vargas with the go-ahead run for the Rams. A wild pitch moved Ulliana to third, and a single through the right side by
Max Mircovich gave URI (2-3) an insurance run. Â
Old Dominion got a two-out double to left center from Jared Hancock to bring Kenny Levari to the plate as the potential tying run. Levari dropped a single into shallow left, bringing in Hancock to make it a one-run game. However,
Jon Morrison – in his third inning of relief, induced a flyout to end the game.
Old Dominion (4-2) had built its lead with the long ball, hitting four solo shots over the first six innings.
Trailing 4-0 through six innings, Rhode Island finally broke through in the top of the seventh inning. Addision Kopack worked a five-pitch walk to start the frame, and
Max Mircovich reached on an error that allowed him to advance to second base. Kopack – who had moved up on a wild pitch – scored on the play.
Mircovich stole third, and a walk to
Alex Ramirez put runners on the corners.
Alex Santos brought Mircovich home on a groundout.
Austin White singled, allowing Ramirez to move over to third base.
Joe Fortin singled to right field, driving in Ramirez. A walk to
Jordan Laske loaded the bases, and
Xavier Vargas grounded out to second, which brought White in with the tying score and setting up extra innings.
