How it Happened
Rhode Island senior
Chris Francoeur won the individual title to lead the Rams to a second-place finish at the Hartford Invitational Friday. The Rams were competing for the first time this spring after coming out of a two-week COVID pause.
Francoeur took the individual medalist honors, shooting a five-under par 65 at the Winonbury Hills Golf Course. He beat Hartford's Ryan Tomaso by one stroke. As a team, the Rams were second in the seven-team field.
"Obviously we are very happy Chris won. He was able to shoot five under with his B game, but he scratched and clawed and won a golf tournament," Rhode Island head coach
Gregg Burke said. "I was proud of his leadership and his grit."

Rhode Island got to as low as nine-under as a team during the round. The Rams finished four-over with a 284. Hartford – which had the second-, third- and fourth-place finishers – were two-under with a team score of 278.
"It's just the rust of having not played," Burke said. "We were robbed of our first two tournaments, and we were not able to play for 11 days. It's not just the physical rust, but the competitive and mental rust."
Sophomore
Bryson Richards tied for sixth place in the individual standings, giving Rhode Island a plus-one 71.
"Overall, I am proud of how hard the guys worked to get here, but we did not get it done. Rhody golf is all about getting it done. We are optimistic about the next tournament because the guys understand the work they have to put in."
