How it Happened
Playing for the first time in 10 days, Rhode Island won its third game in four outings, grabbing a 6-4 win at Boston College Wednesday afternoon.
The Rams (14-15-1) jumped in front immediately, scoring two runs just three batters into the game.
Josh Brodeur and
Joe Fortin led the game off with back-to-back singles.
Sonny Ulliana followed with a double to left center, bringing both runners around for the quick 2-0 lead.
Boston College (15-19) scored single runs in each of the first three innings to take a 3-2 lead. The Eagle pitchers shut down Rhody from the second through the fifth, but the Rams put a crooked number on the board in the top of the sixth.
Xavier Vargas got the rally started with a single, and
Mark Coley followed with a run-scoring triple to the gap in right center. After
Greg Cavaliere walked on four pitches,
Jordan Laske reached on a fielder's choice on which no outs were recorded. The BC infield tried to get Coley at the plate, but he beat the throw home to put URI back in front.
Calvin McCall drew a one-out walk that loaded the bases, and Brodeur reached on a fielder's choice that drove in Cavaliere to make the score 5-3.
The Rams added an insurance run in the top of the seventh. With two outs, Coley singled. He stole second base and moved to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Cavaliere reached on an infield single that allowed Coley to score his second run of the game.
Boston College got the potential tying runs on base with one out in the bottom of the ninth after three singles, the last of which fell just out of the reach of a diving Cavaliere in left field. With two outs, a wild pitch allowed one run to come in, but
Trystan Levesque retired Cody Morissette on a sinking line drive caught by Coley in right field to end the game.Â
