How it Happened

Rhode Island's Chris Francoeur birdied the final two holes to overtake St. Bonaventure's Danny Gianniny to win the individual title at the Upstate Spring Escape in Hamilton, N.Y. Saturday.

Francoeur and Gianniny were tied through 16 holes, but it was Francoeur stepping up. With back-to-back birdies, he capped off a 7-under round of 65 at the par-72 Seven Oaks Club. It was his second individual title in three events for Francoeur this spring.

"When you are tied with two holes to play, it is no longer about golf. It is about your heart and your ability to be competitive," Rhode Island head coach Gregg Burke said. "Chris was Chris today, and the way he finished showed exactly what he is made of."

Francoeur carded nine birdies in the round, a major reason his finished two strokes ahead of the field. His title helped the Rams finished second in the three-team event. St. Bonaventure was -6 as a team. Rhode Island finished +3, five strokes ahead of host Colgate.

Bryson Richards continued to strike the ball well, according to Burke. Richards was steady throughout, recording 15 pars en route to a plus-2 74.

Jordan Brajcich was Rhode Island's third finisher, coming in one stroke behind Richards. After opening the round four over through two holes, Brajcich was 1-under over the final 16 holes.

"Jordan was remarkable after a tough start," Burke said. "The mental toughness he displayed showed how badly he wants the team to win.

Brandon Gillis, Austin Fox and Andrew DiPetrillo each finished plus-5 77. Gillis was playing despite having only been cleared from a COVID quarantine the day the team traveled. Unable to play for two weeks before this weekend, he drew praise from Burke for his performance.

"Brandon played on sheer guts," Burke said. "Given the strength he lost over the last two weeks, he played as well as we could have expected today. That was an effort to be proud of.'

Originally scheduled as a two-day tournament, Sunday's round of the Upstate Spring Escape was canceled due to inclement weather expected in the area.
