Rhode Island Wins 13-Team Rolling Green Intercollegiate

How it Happened

Rhode Island's depth was on display as the Rams bested the 13-team field at the Rolling Green Intercollegiate Saturday.

Redshirt junior Brandon Gillis and sophomore Bryson Richards both shot even par while senior Chris Francoeur was one-over par to lead URI Rhode Island. Andrew DiPetrillo gutted his way through the round to post a plus-4, despite having dealt with back spasms all week leading up to the event.

Rhode Island finished with a team score of 285, two strokes ahead of both Monmouth and Lafayette.

"We are thrilled to have won today," Rhode Island head coach Gregg Burke said. "That's why we go to these events, with the intent to win. It was great for the guys to pull it off. Any time you win a tournament when Chris is third on the team scorecard, it says a lot about all the guys and their ability to step up in big ways.

"This was a really good field on a golf course that has hosted the U.S. Women's Open and the U.S. Amateur. It's a fantastic, difficult course that doesn't leave much room to make up shots."

Richards played what Burke described as flawless golf. He hit par on 14 of the 18 holes, providing a steady presence in the lineup.

He and Gillis tied for third in the individual standings. While their scores matched by the end of the day, their paths were very different. Gillis found himself plus-4 after eight holes, but he maintained his focus and was 4-under over the final 10 holes.

"Brandon never gave up, and he played tremendous golf down the stretch," Burke said. "He didn't make consecutive birdies during the round, so he didn't necessarily get red hot late. What he did was hang in there and really grind out his round. His mental approach was the difference."

The wild card for the Rams was DiPetrillo, who was unable to practice for four days leading up to the tournament due to back spasms. He did not play the practice round the day before the event. Despite that, he posted a heroic 74, proving to be the difference maker in the team standings.

"For Andrew DiPetrillo to do what he did today, dealing with back spasms while playing on a very hilly course in very cold conditions, it is a testament to how tough he is," Burke said. "He stepped up in a big way when the team needed it."
