Francoeur Leads A-10 Field Heading Into Final Round

Team Results | Individual Results

How it Happened
Chris Francoeur shot his way to the top of the individual leaderboard, firing a 4-under par 68 on the second day of the Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Championship in Orlando Saturday.

As a team, the Rams remained in second place in the team standings, just five strokes behind Davidson. The Wildcats – who began the day in third place – were 12-under as a team Saturday to get to 4-under through two rounds. Rhode Island was 3-under on Saturday and sits 2-over with one day remaining. Both teams moved in front of Day One leader Dayton, which posted a team score of plus-7 Saturday.

"We needed everyone to step up today, and Chris reallly set the tone," Rhode Island head coach Gregg Burke said.

Francoeur's 68 was the third-best score carded on Saturday, behind only VCU's Mikkel Antonson's 6-under 66 and VCU's Joe Retford's 5-under 67. The URI senior surged early, recording four birdies on the front nine, including three on the first five holes. Through 36 holes, Francoeur has just one bogey with six birdies.

With one round to go, Francoeur leads Dayton's Henry May by two strokes, while the trio of Retford (VCU), Clayton Tribus (Davidson) and Rhody teammate Jordan Brajcich sit four strokes back.

Brajcich continued his strong play, shooting a 1-over 73 to finish Day Two in a tie for third place overall. He was 1-under through nine holes before carding two bogeys in a span of three holes. Brajcich regrouped and played even par over his final six holes, ending the day with a birdie on 18.

"Jordan had a couple of rough patches, but he again showed what he is made of," Burke said. "He made a career up-and-down from the trap on 18. That hole moved him into third place in the individual standings."

The big mover for Rhode Island was Brandon Gillis, who shot 1-under par 71. Gillis was 2-under over his final 10 holes, finishing strong. Coming one day after Gillis ran out of gas late in the opening round, the strong finish bodes well for the Rams heading into the final day. Gillis jumped 12 spots into a tie for 24th place. Andrew DiPetrillo improved by eight strokes on Saturday, shooting even par and jumping 10 spots to 33rd in the individual standings.

"We are excited to play in the final groups Sunday," Burke said. "We will be with Dayton, VCU and Davidson, and that is a power group."
