PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The individual matches were far more competitive than the team score would indicate in Rhode Island's 7-0 loss at Brown Friday afternoon. Four of the six singles matches were three-set battles, but each went in favor of the host Bears.
Brown (6-6) took the doubles point by sweeping all three matches. Straight-set wins at No. 1 singles and No. 6 singles gave the host Bears a 3-0 lead, one point from victory. Each of the matches at No. 2 through No. 5 singles were tightly contested.
At No. 2 singles,
Nadia Rajan and Brown's Sophia Reddy each won a set by the score of 6-4, with Reddy taking the opening set. She also took the deciding set, 6-3.
Erin Chratian at No. 3 singles and
Klara Nelander at fourth singles had similar matches for the Rams (6-4). After dropping the first set 6-4, Chratian evened the match with a 6-4 set of her own. Soliman outlasted Chratian 7-5 in the third set.
Similarly, Nelander found herself down a set to Addison Ahlstrom, who took the first set 6-4. Nelander rallied with a 7-6 second set, but Ahlstrom grabbed the win with a 7-5 third set.
Tiara Higuchi was the lone Ram to win her first set, winning the opening set against Lindsey Hofflander, 6-2. Hofflander came back to take the next two sets, 6-3, 6-2.
The Rams visit are back in action Sunday with a match at College of Charleston, which begins at 10 a.m. It is the first of three matches in the next week, as Rhode Island plays at Georgia Southern March 16 and Charleston Southern on March 18.
