MILFORD, Conn. – Rhode Island had three players within the top eight finishers after the opening round of the Sacred Heart Fall Classic Sunday. The Rams were second in the 10-team standings with two rounds to go.

Great River Golf Course featured four par-5 holes. Rhody was a combined 5-under on the par-5 holes, but it was 16-over for the rest of the course. As a result, URI was eight strokes behind Sacred Heart, which shot a 3-over 291.

"This was a hard one to watch in some ways because we were terrific on the par fives and poor on the par threes and fours," Rhode Island head coach Gregg Burke.

Fifth-year senior Bryson Richards and freshman Tony Liu both shot 1-over 73 and were among four players tied for fourth place on the individual leaderboard. For Richards, it was his first action since the Temple Invitational Sept. 16-17. Liu's round was even more impressive as he dealt with an unlucky triple bogey on the fourth hole, and then was 2-under the rest of the way.

Senior Geronimo Narizzano came through with a strong 2-over 74. He played even par over the final nine holes.

"Bryson gave us a great score considering he played so little golf with his injury the last three weeks. Typical of Bryson to gut it out," Burke said. "Stars of the day go to Geronimo, who played with complete control and certainly to Tony who showed a toughness we need throughout the lineup. After a bizarre triple bogey when a good drive hit a sprinkler head and disappeared, he played the next nine holes in two under. He continues to show he can be very special."

Round two of the Sacred Heart Fall Classic will tee off Monday morning.
