Richards Wins Sacred Heart Fall Classic By One Stroke

MILFORD, Conn. – Redshirt senior Bryson Richards was three-under par in the final round to take medalist honors at the Sacred Heart Fall Classic Tuesday.

Richards caught Sacred Heart's Marcus Lim on the final day. Lim was the field leader after each of the first two rounds, but Richards outshot him by four strokes Tuesday to win the tournament.

"I am really happy for Bryson, who won his fourth career tournament," Rhode Island head coach Gregg Burke said. "There are very few players in the history of our program who can say that.

"I thought the team really stepped up today. It's something we have talked about all season long, that when we all play together, we will be really good."

The Rams had three of the top five individuals in the 54-player field. Freshman Tony Liu was four-under on Tuesday – shooting the low round of the day with a 68 – to finish in a tie for third place.

"Tony showed again why he could be one of the best players ever at URI. He had the low round of the day in the entire field despite a bogey on," Burke said.

Senior Geronimo Narizzano concluded his strongest showing of the year at plus-five, good for a tie for fifth place.

As a team, Rhode Island shot 282 in the final round, five strokes fewer than the rest of the field. Sacred Heart managed to win the team title, but URI was just five strokes behind. Third-place Fairfield was 32 strokes behind Rhode Island.

Freshman Josiah Tong was 2-over par on Tuesday and finished in 14th place overall. Sophomore Aidan O'Donovan roared back in the final round, shooting 1-under par after struggling through the opening two rounds.

"I thought Josiah really grew up on this trip. He had three double bogeys today, yet he shot only two over," Burke said. "Aidan was having one of the best seasons of anyone on the team before the first two rounds of this tournament, but he dug deep and put on a most masterful performance today, shooting one under, which was nine and 10 strokes better than his previous two rounds.

"Normally, when you have three of the top five scores in the tournament, you win in a runaway," Burke said. "It didn't go our way this trip because we didn't get good back-ups each day, but we had great back-ups today. We're looking forward to next week."

Rhode Island closes out the fall schedule with the Nassau Intercollegiate in Glen Cove, N.Y. on Oct. 23-24.
