HAMPDEN, Mass. – Sophomore
Aidan O'Donovan made a big leap on the individual leaderboard in the second round of the UConn Invitational at GreatHorse Monday.
O'Donovan fired an even-par 72 to climb 21 spots on the leaderboard. He was superb down the stretch, making birdies on holes 11 and 13 and going two-under over the final eight holes. When play ended for the day, O'Donovan was tied for 16th in the field of 78 golfers.
Along with O'Donovan, freshman
Josiah Tong provided a solid 3-over 75. Through the first two rounds of his career, Tong is 5-over, good for a tie for 22nd overall.
"We said yesterday we needed the upperclassmen to step up and Aidan did that by going two under for the final eight holes for an even-par round," Rhode Island head coach
Gregg Burke said. "Josiah continued to show his potential and will be a superstar when he spreads his wings."
Their performances helped the Rams post the sixth-highest team score on the day. Rhody had a team score of 300, three shots better than Day One of the tournament. Heading into the final day, URI sits in eighth place in the 13-team field. Rhode Island is nine strokes out of the top five.
Senior
Geronimo Narizzano started the day strong, shooting even par through the first 13 holes. However, late struggles saw him go 5-over for the final five holes, putting him in a tie for 41st overall. Freshman
Tony Liu shaved two strokes off his opening round, firing a 4-over 76. He sits in a tie for 47th.
Fellow freshman
Owen Rooney is 61st overall after shooting an 80 in the second round.
"The score and places are both so frustrating because we played three par threes of more than 200 yards in one over, but we played the two shortest par fours in six over," Burke said. "With the prospect of
Bryson Richards being out for another event or two, we need to eliminate the mental mistakes to be in the mix.
"I am very interested to see how individual players define themselves tomorrow."
Host Connecticut carded a 292 for the second round in a row, building a six-stroke lead over the field. The Huskies are plus-8 as a team. Boston College (+14) and Siena (+14) are tied for second place, while LIU (+16) and Iona (+18) round out the top five.
Rhode Island will be grouped with Holy Cross and Xavier for Tuesday's final round. The first group is scheduled to tee off at 8:30 a.m.
