GLEN COVE, N.Y. – Rhode Island's
Bryson Richards won his second straight tournament, shooting under par for the second round in a row to win the Nassau Intercollegiate Tuesday.
Playing the par-70 Nassau Country Cub, Richards was 2-under par over the back nine, sinking birdies on holes 13 and 16. He was 2-under for the day after firing a 3-under 67 in the second round of the tournament on Monday. Richards beat LIU's Marcelo Mexsen by three strokes to take medalist honors. Richards was the lone person in the 57-player field to finish under par for the tournament.
Last weekend, Richards won the Sacred Heart Fall Classic, giving him back-to-back titles and five total for his career. The two titles this fall came after he missed two events while recovering from a back injury.
"Before the tournament, we were told the course would be set up so no one could go under par. Only one man did," Rhode Island head coach
Gregg Burke said. "There were four rounds under par out of the 170 rounds played, and Bryson had two of them. He missed more than two weeks with a back injury and he came back to win two tournaments in 11 days. He has now won five tournaments in his career here. He is on his way."
Rhode Island finished second as a team in the 10-team field. On the final day, the Rams had the lowest team score (288) and managed to make up four strokes on the team champion, host LIU.
Freshman
Josiah Tong was superb Tuesday, shooting an even-par 70. After opening the day with a bogey on the first hole, Tong was 1-under over the final 17 holes, sinking three birdies. He finished the tournament in sixth place overall, just two strokes out of the top three. Fellow freshman
Tony Liu and senior
Geronimo Narizzano both tied for 11th place, finishing plus-12 for the tournament.
Â
"Josiah stepped up today. He went from not qualifying on a team of seven players to a sixth-place finish on a very, very difficult golf course," Burke said. "We had a chance to win today, but we had two players combine for eight bogies in the back, so there was no way to make up for it."
Rhode Island's fall portion of the schedule is complete.
Â
"We come out of the fall with 12 rounds from the freshmen, which is a good number of reps," Burke said. "More importantly, we come out knowing who we are 1-7. And two of those freshmen are in the top three."
