HAMPDEN, Mass. – Aidan O'Donovan and
Tony Liu each shot even par on the final day of the UConn Invitational at GreatHorse Tuesday, leading Rhode Island to its best round of the three-day tournament.
The Rams shot 295 as a team in the final round, five strokes better than Monday's round. URI finished in a tie with Holy Cross for eighth place in the team standings. Host Connecticut finished 11 strokes ahead of second-place Siena to win the team title.
"With the current roster and with
Bryson Richards out, expectations change," Rhode Island head coach
Gregg Burke said. "We won this tournament two years ago and should have won last year. So to finish so far back should be a shock to the system, but the guys were incredible on the back nine, where we had given up a couple dozen strokes the first two rounds."
O'Donovan put together back-to-back even-par rounds to finish the tournament tied for 12th place on the individual leaderboard. After a rough opening round, he closed hard on the leaders, moving up 25 spots in two days and finishing within five strokes of medalist Connor Goode from UConn.
Liu improved each day of the tournament. After a six-over 78 on Sunday, he was four-over on Monday before his even-par Tuesday. The freshman was 1-under par over the final 12 holes after making birdies on the seventh, eighth and 17th holes. The strong finish allowed Liu to move up 13 spots in the individual standings.
Fellow freshman
Josiah Tong capped a solid collegiate debut by shooting a four-over 76. Playing in his first tournament, Tong tied for 28th place in the 78-player field. Senior
Geronimo Narizzano shot a three-over 75 on the final day to move up to a tie for 39th place overall. He was one-under over the final eight holes to finish the tournament on a high note.
"Aidan was the only player in the field two under over the final 26 holes," Burke said. "Josiah showed he is ready to take the steps to be a very good college player. Tony hit shots no one on the field is physically capable of. And in The face of four or five bad holes the day before, Geronimo shows he has a toughness we could all use.
"We have a long way to go, but we have the players to do it."
Rhode Island is off for the next 12 days before heading to the Sacred Heart Fall Classic. The two-day tournament will be played on Great River Golf Club in Milford, Conn. Oct. 15 and 16.
