RHODE ISLAND VS. BROWN - SERIES NOTES

  • Saturday's game will be the 107th in the history between Rhode Island and Brown, which dates back to 1909.
  • Though the Bears lead the overall series 73-31-2, Rhody has more Governor's Cup victories (21-19)since the trophy was first introduced in1981.
  • URI has won four straight games against Brown, outscoring its opponent 162-62 in the spread.
  • A win for the Rams would mark their longest streak in the series since a five-game run from 1989-93.
  • The teams have split the last four meetings at the Bears' home stadium, with Brown winning both the 2015 (41-31) and 2017 (24-21) outings before Rhode Island took the 2019 (31-28) and 2021 (45-24) games.
  • The Rams dominated Brown in last year's meeting, outscoring the visiting team 38-3 in the first half before cruising to their eventual 38-10 victory.
  • Quarterback Kasim Hill rushed for a career-high 78 yards on seven carries as part of an effort that saw the team record 289 total yards on the ground.
  • Defensive back Emmanuel Gomes recorded the first interception of his collegiate career in the contest, one of five turnovers forced by the defense.

FLEMING MAKES HISTORY

  • With 10 years under his belt at the helm for Rhode Island, head coach Jim Fleming is not only the third longest tenured coach in URI history, but is also one of the top three winningest coaches in program history.
  • Thanks to last weekend's win against Bryant, he surpassed Tim Stowers (2000-07) for third all-time with 34 career wins at URI.
  • Bob Griffin (1976-92) holds the record with 79 career wins, followed by 70 from second-place Frank Keaney (1920-40).
  • As for his years in Kingston, he is tied with Marshall Tyler, who accumulated 10 seasons between 1898-1901 and 1903-1908.
  • Only Keaney (21 seasons) and Griffin (17 seasons) have more seasons as head coach on the Rhody sideline.

RAMS HAVE ABILITY TO STRIKE QUICKLY

  • Thirteen of Rhode Island's 25 scoring drives this season have taken less than two minutes to complete.
  • Both the team's longest and shortest scoring drives of the year took place during the recent game against the Bulldogs.
  • At the end of a 14-play, 75-yard drive that ate up 7:28 minutes of clock, quarterback Kasim Hill connected a four-yard pass with wide receiver Kahtero Summers
  • On the other end of the spectrum, and in the same quarter of the same game, rookie quarterback Devin Farrell threw a 53-yard touchdown pass to wideout Jig Williams to complete a one-play, 11-second possession.

BEHIND ENEMY LINES (OF SCRIMMAGE)

  • Linebacker A.J. Pena has proven to be difficult for opposing teams' offensive lines to contain.
  • The sophomore currently leads the defense with 6.5 TFLs and 4.5 sacks.
  • In total, he has accounted for the loss of 41 total yards.
  • The Branchburg, N.J. native padded his stats during the game against Bryant, recording a pair of sacks along with a team-best nine tackles.
  • The Bulldogs' signal caller was one of three that Pena reached this season, as he also recorded a sack against Stony Brook (Sept. 8) and at Maine (Sept. 15).
  • He is currently fourth in the conference in sacks and seventh in tackles for loss.
  • Pena is one of four Rams that has gotten to an opposing quarterback this season, joined by  defensive back Emmanuel Gomes (1.0-4), defensive lineman Gabe Salomons (1.0-9) and defensive lineman Jalen Brown (0.5-2).
