Rhody Begins Indoor Season at Split Meets

KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island women's track & field kicked off the 2023-24 indoor season by sending split squads to the Alden Invitational and the Suffolk Relays on Saturday afternoon.

The Rams were represented by a contingent of throwers at the Alden Invitational, hosted by Brown University in Providence, R.I., while the rest of the squad competed at The Track at New Balance. 

Rhody's action was highlighted by a pair of meet records set by Lily Saul and Hanna O'Connor. Saul did so when she won the 1000 meter event, running a personal best time of 2:58.75, while O'Connor led the mile in 5:01.93. 

Highlights
  • Molly Sabia won the 5000 meter event, finishing in 17:50.53. She led the rest of the field by about 15 seconds.
  • Saul was followed by teammate Elise LePage (second), Lilly Pittakas (fourth) and Linsey Arenas (fifth) in the 1000 meter race, one of the strongest events for the Rams on the day.
  • Sydney Federico placed second in the 300 meter, while teammate Amyah Santana was seventh. 
  • Madeline Till finished second in the 3000 meter race, joined in the top 10 by Erin Hurley (fourth), Daniella Napoli (seventh) and Sophia DiMuccio (ninth).
  • Megan Wood threw the shotput 44' 9.25" to place third in the shot put at the Alden invitational. Alyssa Yankee (41' 6.5") was fourth.
  • Erynn Field led the Rams in the weight throw, finishing third (53' 3.75"). Wood was fourth.
  • Virsavia Goretoy placed third in the 60 meter hurdles.
  • Caroline Larkin's mark of 10' 11.75" in the pole vault was good for fourth.
  • Corina Vidal ran to a fourth-place finish in the mile, to finish behind winning teammate O'Connor. Lindsay Turgeon was fifth.
  • Jacqueline Edoro competed her way to fourth in the long jump (17' 6.25").
  • After winning her heat in the 200 meter, Abigail Colella finished fifth in the 200 meter.
  • The quartet of Federico, Saul, Colella and Goretoy won the 4 x 400 meter relay with a time 0f 3:59.35, 10 seconds ahead of the rest of the field.

Up Next
Members of the Rhode Island team will continue their season at the URI Pentathlon, set for Friday, Dec. 8. The 27th annual event is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start.
