• This weekend series is the season opening action for both teams.
• Sam Houston was picked to finish second in the Western Athletic Conference, while Rhode Island was picked sixth in the Atlantic 10.
• Sam Houston senior Carlos Contreras is the reigning WAC Player of the Year, and he is the preseason pick for 2023 as well.
• Last season Contreras led the country with 1.59 runs batted in per game, and he was second overall with 89 RBI. He batted .400 with a .713 slugging percentage and a .468 on-base percentage.
• The Bearkats have posted back-to-back 30-win seasons, going 31-25 last year and 30-25 in 2021.
• Last season, in its first year in the WAC, Sam Houston was 21-9 in conference play.

Rhode Island in 2023

• Redshirt junior Addison Kopack led Rhode Island is hitting last season with a .364 batting average.
• Last season the Rams set a program record by hitting 65 home runs.
• Kopack and sophomore Anthony DePino led the team with 17 and 16, respectively.
• DePino batted .281 with 16 home runs, nine doubles and 39 RBI as a freshman.
• Redshirt senior Billy Butler is back after missing almost the entire season in 2022. He hit a home run in his lone at bat a year ago before suffering a season-ending injury.
• This weekend's series begins a run of 13 consecutive road games to begin the season.
