KINGSTON, R.I. — Rhode Island ended the 2023 Atlantic 10 Women's Indoor Track & Field Championship on a high note, winning the 4x400 relay race in a time of 3:51.80 Sunday afternoon.
The team of
Trinity Smith,
Sydney Federico,
Sanaiya Watts and
Xiana Twombly edged Davidson at the finish, beating the Wildcat contingent by 0.01 seconds.
Federico ran a strong second leg for the Rams, running a split time of 57.31 seconds. It was the fastest of the second legs among all schools. When she handed off to Watts, Rhody had a 0.64 second lead. Watts extended the lead over Davidson by an additional 0.27 seconds, and URI needed all of it with Davidson's Aleia Gisolfi-McCready waiting for the final leg. Gisolfi-McCready ran the fastest split of the entire race (56.76 seconds), but it was not enough to overtake Rhody's anchor, Twombly. Twombly posted a split of 57.18 seconds, ensuring URI ended the meet with the relay title.
Earlier in the day, freshman
Lily Saul took home the individual title in the 800-meter race. Saul finish a full second ahead of Richmond junior Kyra Keurentjes to capture the crown. Saul crossed the line in 2:10.86, well ahead of Keurentjes, who finished in 2:11.92. The race was mostly Spiders and Rams at the top. Behind the top two finishers, Richmond's Caroline Donohoe and Lindsay Colflesh placed third and fourth, while Rhode Island junior
Hanna O'Connor offered a sixth-place finish.
The victories from the 4x400 relay and Saul helped Rhode Island move up a few spots in the team standings.
