CHARLESTON, S.C. — Rhode Island freshman
Priyanka Shanker was victorious in both singles and doubles action, but it was not enough to impact the team result as the Rams lost 6-1 at the College of Charleston Friday afternoon at the College of Charleston Tennis Center.
Shanker and
Nikki Fernando teamed up to win at No. 3 doubles. They knocked off Maja Jekauc and Klara Vukicevic 6-3. However, College of Charleston took the first and second doubles matches to earn the team point.
The Cougars won the first five singles matches to seal the team victory. Rhody's
Valentina Cvackova played a strong match a No. 2, battling Jekauc through three sets. Jekauc eventually won the marathon, 3-6, 6-3, 10-8.
Shanker managed to end URI's Spring Break trip with a win. She outlasted McKenzie Daniel, 7-6, 2-6, 10-6.
Rhode Island returns home on Saturday, March 25 when it hosts Atlantic 10 rival Davidson at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport. The match begins at 12:20 p.m.
