PRINCETON, N.J. - Opening the spring season against national powers Princeton and Brown, Rhode Island lost each of its races on Carnegie Lake Saturday morning.

The host Tigers won the Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+A races, edging Brown in both of the flights. Brown was victorious in the Second Varsity 8+ race, beating Princeton by 2.7 seconds.

In the Varsity 8+ race, Rhode Island's team of coxswain Ellie McGee, Julia Fortin, Hailey Pardi, Catie Castle,  Nicole Jones, Emma Barnhart, Elizabeth Greason, Samantha Gumprecht and Bella Bruno finished the 2,000-meter course in a time of 7:13.6. Princeton, which placed third at the 2022 NCAA Championship, had a winning time of 6:36.6.

The teams were racing into a cross headwind that reached speeds of 10 to 12 miles per hour.

In the Second Varsity 8+, the team of coxswain Danielle Swan, Sarah Pecoraro, Lauren Thomas, Emily Olin, Emily Drappeau, Cait Reardon, Bethany Nordstrom, Amelia Katula and Olivia Kowalski posted a time of 7:25.00.

The Varsity 4+ squad of coxswain Lily Stasaitis, Emma Larsh, Lydia Dillon, Alexis Moore and Sammie Gorecki finished in 8:05.4, while the Varsity 4+B team of coxswain Caitlyn Muteru, Jessica Tosi, Emma Brookins, Irma Accius and Hannah Bachert finished in 8:33.3.
