SPRINGFIELD, MASS. – Rhode Island will once again play in the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off during the 2023-24 men's basketball season, it was announced Tuesday afternoon. The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame announced the field of teams for the tournament, which also includes Northwestern, Mississippi State and Washington State.
The annual NCAA men's exempt tournament, sponsored by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, will take place Nov. 18-19 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.
Rhode Island will open the tournament against Northwestern on Nov. 18. The winner of that game will face the winner of Mississippi State-Washington State the next day, with the two losing teams facing off in the consolation game.
"We are excited to host another highly competitive weekend of basketball at the Mohegan Sun for the 2023 Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament," said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. "We look forward to watching the field of teams play and welcoming their fans to one of the country's best early season events."
"We are excited to participate in the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off," Rhode Island head coach
Archie Miller said. "In addition to offering a great opportunity to measure up against schools from the SEC, Big Ten and Pac-12, this is a high-end event right in our backyard. Rhode Island fans can create a homecourt setting for us, which makes for a great atmosphere."
Rhode Island last played in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off in 2020 as part of its extended stay at Bubbleville at Mohegan Sun. The Rams beat USF and San Francisco in the Tip-Off contests. In 2016, Rhody beat No. 24/25 Cincinnati and had a tough 75-65 loss to No. 1 Duke at the event.
The 2023 Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off is one event in the Hall of Fame's series of collegiate events, which continues to grow in an effort to celebrate the game outside the museum walls. The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame is proud to continue its relationship with LEARFIELD for sponsorship representation of its portfolio of collegiate events and Position Sports in an event operations, content and communications capacity.
