Five Rowers Earn CRCA Scholar-Athlete Honors

KINGSTON, R.I. - Five members of the Rhode Island rowing team were recognized as Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association 2023 National Scholar-Athletes.

Julia Fortin, Samantha Gumprecht, Nicole Jones, Danielle Swan and Jessica Tosi all received recognition from the organization. It is reserved for student-athletes in their second, third or fourth year of eligibility who competed in at least 75 percent of their team's spring races while also maintaining a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher for her career through the fall semester/quarter for the current competition year.

Each of the five women played a key role in helping the Rams place second at the Atlantic 10 Championship in May. Fortin, who graduated with a master's degree in communications this spring, was recently nominated for NCAA Woman of the Year by the Rhode Island Department of Athletics. Both she and Jones, a data science/business innovation & entrepreneurship major, earned Atlantic 10 All-Conference laurels.

Though Fortin and Swan (secondary education & history) have exhausted their eligibility, Jones, Gumprecht (communications) and Tosi (nursing) will return to the squad for the 2023-24 season.
