PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – Rhode Island's
Bryson Richards fired a 2-under 68 in the opening round of the Temple Invitational Saturday.
Richards is one stroke off the lead. Drexel's Oscar Maxfield and Penn's Hayden Adams share the lead at the midpoint of the tournament, each shooting a 67.
Richards had four birdies and two bogeys on the day, getting his season off to a solid start.
"Bryson was Bryson," Rhode Island head coach
Gregg Burke said. "He has the chance to go out ahead of the leaders and put some pressure on them."
As a team, the Rams are in a tie for fourth place in the 14-team field. Rhody and Rider both shot 291, eight shots behind first-place Drexel.
"We came here to win, so not being in the final group is not what we expected but it does give us an opportunity to go out and post a number," Burke said. "We were seven over through the first two holes on scores we used. While that should never happen, I am proud of how the guys fought through it."
Senior
Geronimo Narizzano provided a solid round for URI, carding a 1-over 71. He is tied for eighth in the 78-player field.
"Geronimo really stepped up today," Burke said. "He played very little tournament golf this summer because he worked so many hours at his summer job so the last 10 days was kicking off the rust. Hats off to him for stepping up.
"The freshmen became freshmen on the back nine today. I have complete confidence they will not only bounce back but be instrumental in putting us in contention every tournament.
After a tough start that saw him open four-over after two holes, sophomore
Aidan O'Donovan was just 1-over over the final 16 holes.
"While five over is but a score we need to win, it was great to watch Aidan scratch and claw to one over on his final 16 holes," Burke said. "As hard and fast as the greens were today, we expect more of the same tomorrow. Team scores were 8-10 shots worse than last year so throwing a red number out there gives us a chance."
