NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshmen Tony Liu and Owen Rooney each shot a four-over 74 to lead the Rhode Island contingent in the final round of the MacDonald Cup hosted by Yale University Sunday.

As a team, the Rams struggled in the final round, shooting a combined plus-22. As a result, URI – which was without top player Bryson Richards due to injury - finished 11th in the team standings. Host Yale won the tournament by five strokes, shooting an 856 compared to Seton Hall's 861.

"It is shocking for me to say this, but we lack toughness," Rhode Island head coach Gregg Burke said. "Discipline and toughness have been both trademarks and weapons for us. We knew playing without Bryson would likely take us out of a run for the championship, but we also knew it was a chance for people to step up.
 
"We got beat by teams that the last decade of players worked their tails off to be better then."

Liu was Rhode Island's most consistent player over the weekend, as he shot 73-75-74 to card a plus-12 222. He tied for 21st in the 72-player field. Sophomore Aidan O'Donovan was URI's top finisher, tying for 19th overall. He was tied for sixth heading into the final round, but a tough start hurt him, as he was plus-seven through his first nine holes before steadying the ship and playing even over the final nine holes.
 
Rooney was the team's biggest mover on Sunday, jumping up six spots on the individual leaderboard to tie for 48th overall. He shot a 74 on the final day, matching his opening-round score.

Geronimo Narizzano placed 52nd overall and Seb Carlsson was tied for 62nd to round out the Rhode Island contingent.

Rhode Island is back in action next week for the UConn Invitational at Greathorse. The three-day event begins Sunday, Oct. 1.
