KINGSTON, R.I. - On the heels of numerous postseason accolades, offensive lineman
Lorenzo Thompson has earned an invitation to the Hula Bowl.
Thompson is one of three Rams to receive an invite to such a game, joining Nick Corriea (Hula Bowl) and
Sebastian Delasoudas (Trillion Tropical Bowl).
Known as the nation's premier college football all-star game, the Hula Bowl will be played on Saturday, Jan. 13 at the University of Central Florida's FBC Mortgage Stadium. This is the third year that the Hula Bowl will be played outside of Hawaii, as Honolulu's Aloha Stadium continues to be closed for renovations. Kick-off is scheduled for 12 p.m. in Orlando and the game will be carried by CBS Sports Network.
A 2023 First Team All-CAA Football selection, Thompson led an offensive line that allowed teammate
Ja'Den McKenzie to break a nearly 70-year-old record when he rushed for 13 touchdowns in 2023. The Rams ran the ball for 133.3 yards per game, with McKenzie averaging 6.58 yards per carry - good for 10th in the country. Behind its line, URI was also 10th in the nation in passing offense (284.8 yds. per game).
An All-New England honoree and a Phil Steele Third Team All-American, Thompson capped his Rhody career with 37 consecutive starts.
The 78th Hula Bowl will draw scouts from the NFL, CFL and others professional leagues. Around 100 players from all three divisions will participate, as well as international players from Japan, Canada, Australia and the UK. Also featured will be Polynesian players with ties to the Islands, where the Hula Bowl originated in 1946.
Former NFL head coaches Brian Billick and Mike Smith will lead the Aina and Kai teams, named for the Hawaiian language words for land and sea.
