GLEN COVE, N.Y. – Freshman
Luke Stennett finished in a tie for fourth overall to lead Rhode Island at the Nassau Intercollegiate Tuesday. However, a tough day for the team as a whole saw the Rams slip from second to fourth place in the 13-team standings.
After being a combined plus-17 through the first two rounds, Rhode Island shot plus-19 as a team in the final round. Oklahoma Christian – led by medalist Oskari Nikku's four-under par – won the team title by 14 strokes over the field. Boston College (+30) placed second, followed by Delaware (+34), Rhode Island (+36) and Belmont (+37).
Stennett fired a 3-over 73 to lead URI. Junior
Aidan O'Donovan shot a plus-5 for the day, while freshman
Tyler Bruneau finished the day plus-7. O'Donovan finished 20th in the individual standings, while sophomore
Josiah Tong was 25th in the field of 68.
The Rams are back in action Saturday at the Ledgemont Match Play in Seekonk, Mass.
Rhode Island head coach Gregg Burke said...
"This was a letdown day for us. We didn't start particularly well and when we started to make a littler move, we lost focus.
Â
"We really hoped to go low on the back nine, but besides Luke who was even, the other four guys were all three over. Of the four players whose scores we used, we were seven over for the final four holes which took us from second to fourth.
Â
"We will regroup for sure. I still have confidence in our top three (Tyler, Luke, Aidan) but we need much better scoring out of the fourth and fifth spots."
