WEST ORANGE, N.J. – Rhode Island closed out its Fall season by winning its fourth team title in five possible events, cruising past the Metropolitan Intercollegiate field by 17 strokes Tuesday.
The Rams had five individuals among the top 10 scores in the field of 72 golfers. Junior
Aidan O'Donovan led the way with a second-place finish. He shot a plus-3 for the tournament, finishing just one stroke behind medalist Jake Mrva of Fordham.
Right behind O'Donovan was graduate student
Sean Magarian at plus-6, which tied him for third place. Magarian competed in the event as an individual.
The Rams still had their top four finishers in the top 10. In addition to O'Donovan, freshman
Luke Stennett and sophomore
Tony Liu tied for fifth place at plus-7, while sophomore
Josiah Tong was tied for ninth place.
The two best rounds of the day belonged to Tong and Liu. Tong was the lone player in the field to shoot under par on the day, as he fired a 1-under 69 that was highlighted by five birdies. With his big day, Tong moved 26 spots up the leader board into a tie for ninth place overall. Liu had the second-best round in the field with a plus-1 71. Like Tong, he made a big jump on the leader board, moving 13 spots into a tie for fifth place overall.Â
Freshman
Tyler Bruneau placed 16th overall with a plus-11 and sophomore
Seb Carlsson was 35th with a plus-16. All seven Rhody golfers in the event finished in the top half of the field.
The next time Rhode Island competes will be at legendary Torrey Pines for the University of California San Diego Invitational from March 23-25. The course has hosted multiple U.S. Open events.
Rhode Island head coach Gregg Burke said...
"Our entire mission was to come here and play a very hard golf course to see how much we've improved. What we did in the first round was remarkable given the pins and speed of the greens.
"The three guys who played well yesterday did not play great today and the two who did not play well yesterday had the two best rounds of the field today. We had three guys finish in the top three for all four medal tournaments. That consistency is impressive. But we need more from the other three guys who have been in the 4-5 slots.
"This was a great experience for us because of the golf course. And, in our first tournament we were down four to Sacred Heart with eight holes left. In this tournament we beat them by 35. So we clearly have improved.
"We need one of our guys to break through and get a win and I think it will spur other top finishes."
